In OverseerFM you can enter up to three soils per block. The choice of soil requires consideration based on a physical understanding of the block and the soil characteristics identified by the soil data set used.
OverseerFM defaults to S-map where it is available and provides S-map soil sibling data based on the geo-locations of the blocks drawn. S-map is a sophisticated soil model provided by Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research that provides detailed information on soils on a 1:20,000 scale. S-map is a model and therefore is subject to updates. Soil siblings downloaded from S-map should be checked annually for any updates. Because of the scale of S-map, ground-truthing of the soil coverage should always be done when setting up block soils.
Where S-Map soils are not available, an auto suggestion of a blocks Fundamental Soil Layer (soil group and order) will occur based on the block’s location if it is drawn, or the farm location if not drawn. Or you can add soil order and group manually.
