Summary
Wetlands can be created as fenced off blocks or as unfenced areas on the farm. Each wetland must define a set of characteristics that are used to determine their efficiency and the catchment (blocks) that flows into the wetland.
The following diagram depicts what parts of the model wetland information entered in OverseerFM impacts. For a full interactive view of the scientific model in its entirety please click here
Impact
Wetlands capture nutrient loss and so can lower the overall loss from a farm. The model calculates the amount captured by wetlands separately and so does not influence the reported loss from each of the blocks, but is reported in the overall farm loss.
Details
The nutrients captured by a wetland is dependent on the nutrient load and the efficiency of the wetland. The load is based on rainfall and runoff from the blocks in the catchment. The efficiency is dependent on the characteristics of the wetland, such as condition and type.
NIWA have created a visual guide to help determine Wetland condition.
