The increasing practice of off-paddock wintering systems for dairy cows, especially in South Island, results in the collection of larger volumes of effluent that need storage and disposal, representing more costs to farmers. The potential for applying effluent over winter months, reducing the need for large storage ponds, is thus appealing to farmers, but the risks of nutrient losses need to be better understood before this practice can be implemented.
