In our software release on 11 June we are including the ability to add Plantain as a pasture. This is a data entry update only and the modelling that will demonstrate the impact of Plantain on N-loss as identified by the FRNL project will be added once the testing is completed.
We have chosen to release the Plantain pasture mix data entry fields ahead of the final release of the updates to the science model because we are heading into the annual reporting season for irrigation schemes, dairy processors and councils, and this enables consultants to not have to duplicate effort (and therefore cost) to add Plantain when it becomes available.
For now, the Plantain pasture mix (which can be from 5-60%) will be modelled as ryegrass. Once the Plantain modelling has been approved, it will be released and farm analyses will automatically be updated.
As indicated in in-app messaging, Plantain should only be selected if it contains plantain varieties/brands that have been recognised as being environmentally functional. Evidence of this may be required in audit processes. The definition of environmentally functional is outside of the scope of Overseer and is being discussed across industry.
