In OverseerFM you can enter up to three soils per block. The choice of soil requires consideration based on a physical understanding of the block and the soil characteristics identified by the soil data set used.
OverseerFM defaults to S-map where it is available and provides S-map soil sibling data based on the geo-locations of the blocks drawn. S-map is a sophisticated soil model provided by Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research that provides detailed information on soils on a 1:20,000 scale. S-map is a model and therefore is subject to updates. Soil siblings downloaded from S-map should be checked annually for any updates. Because of the scale of S-map, ground-truthing of the soil coverage should always be done when setting up block soils.
If S-map data is not available, Soil order will need to be chosen. Soil order data comes from the Fundamental Soil Layer – FSL which is a soil classification national dataset that doesn’t change. Additional soil properties can be added should you have them available.
